My Week with Marilyn
12/15/2011 7:30:00 PM

In the early summer of 1956 23 year-old Colin Clark, just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of “THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL”, the film that united Sir Laurence Olivier with Marilyn Monroe, who, whilst shooting, was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller.

Nearly 40 years on, his diary account “THE PRINCE,THE SHOWGIRL AND ME” was published, but one week was missing, and this is the story of that week: an idyll in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to getaway from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of working. When Arthur Miller makers a brief trip to Paris, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce her to some of the pleasures of British life.

The collision of the two worlds – old England and new Hollywood – is as incongruous as it is delightful. Slowly Marilyn begins to shake off the dark fog of insecurity and fear always hovering around her. She reacts with lovely naturalness to this alien world and as she relaxes she offers Colin fleeting insights into her own background – one of family madness,single-minded ambition and uninhibited sexuality. Simply and without self-pity,she relates the tale of her rise to the top in Hollywood; a story involving abuse of one form or another at the hands of almost every man she has ever known, abuse that has left her with only the thinnest of protective layers.

She is not without her contradictions – everyone wants something from her, but she is too fixated on the life she has chosen and is quite unable to leave it, even though the pressure is crushing her…

… and yet, for a moment, lost in the English countryside, it seems she might finally escape.

Beginners
12/14/2011 7:30:00 PM

When it comes to relationships, we’re all beginners.

From writer/director Mike Mills comes Beginners, a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments.

Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds) only months after his father Hal Fields (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away.

This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life – which included a younger boyfriend, Andy (Goran Visnjicof ER). The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

At once deeply personal and universal, Beginners was inspired by Mike Mills’ own father and is meant in turn to inspire everyone weighing their chances and choices in life and love.

Tree of Life
12/12/2011 7:30:00 PM

From director Terrence Malick (BADLANDS,DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE THIN RED LINE, THE NEW WORLD) comes a thought provoking film experience.  His fifth film, THE TREE OF LIFE, is a hymn to life, excavating answers to the most haunting and personal human questions through a kaleidoscope of the intimate and the cosmic, from the raw emotions of a family in a small Texas town to the wildest, infinite edges of space and time, from a boy’s loss of innocence to a man’s transforming encounters with awe, wonder and transcendence.

An impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's, the film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt).  Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

The film, winner of the Best Director Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Prix de la Jeunesse, begins with Martha (Elizabeth Olsen in her feature film debut) running from an idyllic farmhouse into the woods of Upstate New York. Terrified, and with nowhere to turn, she calls the estranged sister she hasn’t seen in years (Sarah Paulson),and suddenly finds herself in a lush, lakeside Connecticut summerhouse with Lucy and her new husband Ted (Hugh Dancy). Yet, the beauty and comfort of Martha’s new surroundings clash with everything she is feeling as a secret fugitive from an unexplainable world, and so long away from society’s rules, she is unable to act in a way others find normal.

Martha may have run away, but she still is held captive by memories that slowly, devastatingly, begin to creep up on her.  Seeping into her fledgling new life, revealing all that she has been through, from the innocent desire for familial love that brought her to a secluded farm commune to her chilling relationship with the fatherly but manipulative community leader Patrick (John Hawkes).  Building, until they expose the heart-stopping source of her mounting dread.

Moneyball
10/25/2011 7:30:00 PM
Columbia Pictures’ Moneyball is based on the true story of BillyBeane (Brad Pitt) – once a would-be baseball superstar who, stung by thefailure to live up to expectations on the field, turned his fiercelycompetitive nature to management.  Heading into the 2002 season, Billyfaces a dismal situation: his small-market Oakland A’s have lost their starplayers (again) to big market clubs (and their enormous salaries) and is leftto rebuild his team and compete with a third of their payroll. Driven to win,Billy takes on the system by challenging the fundamental tenants of the game. Helooks outside of baseball, to the dismissed theories of Bill James, and hiresPeter Brand (Jonah Hill), a brainy, number-crunching, Yale-educatedeconomist.  Together they take on conventional wisdom with a willingnessto reexamine everything and armed with computer driven statistical analysislong ignored by the baseball establishment.  They reachimagination-defying conclusions and go after players overlooked and dismissedby the rest of baseball for being too odd, too old, too injured or too muchtrouble, but who all have key skills that are universally undervalued.  AsBilly and Peter forge forward, their new methods and roster of misfits rile theold guard, the media, the fans, and their own field manager (Philip SeymourHoffman), who refuses to cooperate. Ultimately this experiment will lead notonly to a change in the way the game is played, but to an outcome that wouldleave Billy with a new understanding that transcends the game and delivers himto a new place.
